Your Safety in Your Hand ~ Maintain a Safe Distance
Crash avoidance space
As a driver, you should know your suitable speed according to road conditions and traffic situations also position to keep a safe distance from vehicles in front and to the sides of your vehicle. This is called your crash avoidance space.
Many of the crashes that happen each day in Australia could be avoided if every driver kept their crash avoidance space.
To maintain crash avoidance space to the front of your vehicle, you need to take into account two key factors – reaction time and response time:
- Reaction time is the time a driver needs to see and understand a situation, decide on a response, and then start to take action. A driver who is fit and alert and not affected by alcohol, drugs or fatigue, needs about to react to a hazard
- Response time is the time a driver needs to take action. Most people need at least 1.5 seconds to respond, for example, to brake.
In good conditions, people need a 3-second crash avoidance space (often called the 3-second gap) to react and respond to a situation safely and avoid a crash.
After A
Accident
No matter how minor you think the car crash was, it’s important to take the appropriate steps.
Check for Injuries
After a accident, the first things to do is check for injuries. If you or anyone is injured, call emergency services (000) immediately.
Exchange Information With
Other Driver
Once you’re in a safe Place, exchange information with the other driver. Make sure you get their full name and address, contact information, insurance company and policy number, and driver licence number, Vehicle plate number. including make, model, color.
Most importantly you should note time and location details.
Contact Nearest
Police Station
Even if the accident was minor and no one injured, you should always report the police. The police will create an accident report, which can be helpful in the insurance claims process.
Move to Safe
Place
Move to a Safe Place Once you’ve checked for injuries, move your vehicle off of the road to a safe place. This will help prevent any further accidents from occurring. Make sure you also put on your hazard lights to warn other drivers.
Take
Picture
Take pictures of the accident scene, the damage to your vehicle, and the other driver’s vehicle. These photos can help prove what happened in an insurance claim or lawsuit.
Claim Insurance
Company
After you taken care of everything at the event of accident, it’s time to contact your insurance company and let them know what happened. You’ll need to provide all of the information from the other driver and any pictures you took when you make the claim.
